From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: this pilot was conducting an IFR flight from charlottesville, VA to Gaithersburg, MD. Before departure the pilot received a wx briefing that indicated gusty winds and possible tsm in area. He was cleared through cassanova VOR to fdk VOR with the VOR approach into gai. Because of weather at gai, he held for a short time at fdk until the weather cleared gai. He was then cleared for the gai approach. The approach was uneventful until he became VFR at 1500 feet, inside the final approach fix (felix). The pilot saw his airspeed becoming erratic and falling and his altitude descending. He immediately added full power and initiated a gentle climb. He could see better than 4 miles at the time and had the area of the airport in sight. It was dark. He stated he saw a dark shape and heard a loud whoosh. The aircraft continued to fly normally. He entered the traffic pattern at gai and landed. While taxiing in he called ATC and cancelled his clearance. Not until getting out of the aircraft, did he see the damage. Even though the aircraft was damaged in numerous areas, all damage was minor. The pilot was counseled for not reporting an unforcasted weather condition. No further action to be taken. It has been determined that the pilot entered an extreme wind shear condition due to a strong rapidly approaching cold front, with tsm, in the vicinity of the airport.
