From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Mr. Terry was conducting a multi-engine training flight with Mr. Soule as the student in N2153B, a PA-44-180. A second student was aboard as an observer. During take off from runway 29R at Fresno Yosemite International Airport, Mr. Terry simulated failure of the left engine by pulling the mixture control to idle cutoff. Mr. Soule failed to respond to the simulated emergency and lost directional control of the airplane. Aircraft veered to the left and departed the runway into the grass area adjacent to the runway. Mr. Terry regained control of the situation by pulling the mixture control of the right engine to idle cutoff as the aircraft exited the runway and brought it to a stop. There were no injuries to the instructor, student, observer, or persons on the ground. There was no damage to airport property or facilities. Maintenance personnel conducted an inspection of the aircraft and determined there was no damage as a result of this incident.
