From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On April 19, 2005, the pilot of a Beechcraft, N299X, was enroute on an IFR flight plan from van nuys (vny) airport to reid hillview (rhv) airport. The pilot stated that the engine began to run rough and a few minutes later the cabin started to fill with white smoke. The pilot contacted oakland center and requested vectors to Paso Robles (prb) airport. On the descent and approximately 6 to 8 miles from the airport the left side of the engine cowling popped open. As the pilot was approaching the airport, he decided that he would not be able to make the runway and started a left hand turn to look for an open field. The aircraft landed in a vineyard approximately one mile from Paso Robles airport.
