From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Aircraft accident. Yak 3U R2000. Hever, UT, July 9, 2005. The pilot stated that on entering the airport landing pattern, in a 45 degree bank, the engine stopped making power. He attempted to restart the engine, the engine surged, flipped the aircraft upside down. He got the aircraft under control, upright, and tried to get to the airfield. He felt that he could not make the runway without endangering aircraft and people in the area, so he put the aircraft on the ground, gear up. The aircraft has substantial damage.
