(-23) On March 18, 2006, northwest flight 1180, enroute from detroit (dtw) to Bradley (bdl), declared an emergency due to a missing right hand landing gear wheel and tire assembly. While enroute, the flight crew was notified by flight dispatch that one tire assembly had separated from the aircraft after takeoff. The aircraft, a DC-9-51 with registration number N671MC, landed on runway 24 without incident, and taxied to the gate area. Upon initial inspection, the inboard right hand main landing gear tire assembly was found missing. Subsequent inspection revealed damage to right hand inboard axle sleeve, right hand inboard brake assembly, foreign object damage (FOD) to the right hand engine inlet fan and inlet fan case assembly, and a 3 ft. by 1 ft. dent at the right hand lower aft fuselage area, forward of the aft cargo compartment. The aircraft was out of service and was repositioned to the tac-air hangar facility at bdl for corrective action. Northwest maintenance personnel removed and replaced the right hand inboard main landing gear axle sleeve, brake assembly, anti-skid system connector, and both the inboard and outboard wheel and tire assemblies. Maintenance also removed and replaced the right hand engine C-1 fan and inlet case assembly. All maintenance work was performed in accordance with northwest maintenance policies and procedures. Per northwest engineering, a high frequency eddy current inspection was performed on the dented fuselage area with no defects noted. The aircraft was approved for a one time pressurized ferry flight from bdl to dtw for further maintenance followup.
