From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On 12/28/2006, at approximately 11:18 PST, N787CD departed Reid-Hillview airport (rhv) for palm springs airport (psp). Approximately 10 NM north west of panoche VORTAC (pxn) while climbing to 13,500 feet MSL, the pilot smelled burning insulation and observed wispy white smoke rising up from behind the instrument panel. He turned the aircraft towards the nearest airport (hollister, CA) and started troubleshooting the problem. The pilot noticed the RPM gauge went to zero so he pulled the breakers connected to that buss. The smell subsided and they observed no more smoke. At this point the pilot elected to continue back to Reid-Hillview airport and landed without further incident.
