From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The pilot was with an instructor conducting mountain flying training. The aircraft was returning to home base after having lunch at a remote airfield. The pilot was instructed to turn up a river canyon as a shorter route back to base. At a fork in the river the wrong fork was taken. After the crew recognized their mistake they tried to turn around but found that the terrain was too tight and the aircraft could not outclimb the rising terrain. The aircraft hit the trees and came to rest inverted. Amended on 9/26/12 to correct blocks 29, 31, 32, & 42.
