From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Cessna 206 (N7269T) departed Idaho Falls, Idaho (ida) airport and upon reaching 300 ft AGL the pilot and passenger smelled smoke. As they turned on the downwind leg attempting to return to the runway for landing, smoke filled the cockpit and the pilot and passenger had zero visibility. The pilot opened his window and landed the aircraft while his head was still outside the window. The aircraft stopped on the runway quickly and the two occupants exited the plane. Damage occurred to the firewall, numerous mounting bracket, aircraft battery, battery box, fuselage skin and engine cowling, and cabin air intake door.
