From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The 2 leg flight of a Beech A36, N61WB originated from kexx (davidson county airport in lexington, NC). Before departing kexx, aircraft was topped off with 40.4 gals. Of fuel. Aircraft departed kexx, landed at kgso, and took on two passengers. IFR flight plan was filed going from kgso to kdab (daytona beach, FL). Aircraft landed at kdab and passengers got out of the aircraft. The pilot requested and received 30 gals of fuel (15 gals in each wing). An IFR flight plan was filed going from kdab (daytona beach, FL) to kexx (davidson county airport). Approximately 2 hrs, 59 mins into the flight, pilot reported loss of engine power and made a forced landing near Marshville, NC. The aircraft was heading in a northerly direction then made a rapid directional change toward the west. The aircraft impacted several small trees in a left wing low attitude before coming to rest in a grove of trees in a nose low/slightly tail high position(approx. 25 degrees). The pilot was fatally injured. Upon arriving on scene, it was noted that there was no post-impact fire and that the 3 blade hartzell propeller was not rotating upon impact as one blade was bent approx. 90 degrees in an rearward direction-other 2 blades were not damaged. Landing gear and flaps were fully retracted. The controls for the throttle, mixture and propeller were found in the full forward position. Several pieces of windshield plastic and wing tip lens covers were found scattered about the scene. Substantial damage was observed at the firewall, windshield frame uprights, both wing leading edges, upper left wing skins and horizontal stabilizer. The fuel selector valve was found selected to the right tank. Found no evidence of fuel leaks or rupture to the fuel bladders. Tanks appeared to be empty upon visual inspection. The pilot held an airline transport rating for airplane multi-engine land and had a reported total of 17000 hours.
