From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Pilot reported, after through preflight and run up per Mooney checklist and POH, they departed runway 07 at kheg. Shortly after raising the gear they had an sudden, immediate, full loss of engine power (no sputter or partial power) at 300 feet AGL. Pilot announced to the right seat passenger "I've lost power, I've lost power". Pilot reported because he were so low he informed the passenger he would land straight ahead and asked him to switch the fuel selector to the other tank per Mooney POH procedure hoping our windmilling prop would restore engine power. Pilot reported no power was restored. Pilot indicated he had quickly scanned the area ahead and aimed for the clearing slightly left of the 07 departure while pitching for best glide. He then then selected gear down and attempted land off airport in the grass and sand. Upon touchdown the nose gear and left main gear collapsed and the windmilling prop struck the ground. The aircraft came to rest aprox 1500 feet from the departure end of rwy 07, kheg, and slightly north toward an extended clearing.

As the FAA filed it
