From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The accident happened at a private airport (FL82) in Oakhill Florida. The airport has one runway (runway 17/35). This airport is a fly-in community with residents living along the runway. The runway is grass and about 3335 feet long.

Pilot had just traded for this aircraft, privacy data omitted a DA-2 amateur built. The aircraft had conventional landing gear.

Witnesses described what appeared to be the pilot taxing back and forth on runway 17/35 to get used to the aircraft before beginning what was assumed to be his takeoff roll on runway 17 when they heard the increase in engine power. Witnesses said that about midway down the runway the pilot began to lose control of the aircraft and veered rapidly off to the left. The aircraft struck a tree on the left side of the runway. The pilot suffered fatal injuries and the aircraft was destroyed.

There were tire marks in the grass from the point that the pilot began to lose control up to the impact with the tree that supported the description from witnesses.

The weather was good visual flight conditions with some wind that was described as light to breezy and out of the west.
