From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On may 18, 2024, at approximately 1046 MDT, a Piper PA28 single-engine land aircraft (asel) was involved in an accident near Dell City, TX. The pilot was flying VFR to el Paso, TX international airport (kelp) and stated he experienced an engine failure while in straight and level flight enroute to the airport. The pilot selected an available field to land; and during the off-field landing, the aircraft was substantially damaged. No FAA flight plan was filed. The flight originated at the midland international air and space port airport, kmaf, earlier in the day. The FAA private pilot was not injured.

Subsequent investigation determined that the accident was attributable to fuel starvation caused by the pilot's failure to switch fuel tanks in a timely manner.
