From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
Student pilot and CFI taxiied aircraft to runway 5 at ogg awaiting clearance for take off. Aircraft idled and waited approx ten minutes with a 30KNOT crosswind. Engine stalled and backfired emitting flames and smoke out of air intake of aircraft. CFI shutoff fuel/stopped engine and deployed fire extinquisher to engine/intake. Maintenace review concluded that inadequate air intake due to crosswind allowed fuel to build up in carb and when backfired it incinerated the air filter, damaging mount bracket and blackening inner cowl.
