Probable cause

Failure of the pilot to select the proper fuel tank and resultant fuel starvation power loss. A factor was the unsuitable terrain.

Sequence of events

NTSB’s coding before 2008: each occurrence and phase of flight, and the causes and factors under it. The codes are defined in NTSB’s coding manual.

Fluid,fuel - starvationCause
Fuel tank selector position - improperPilot in commandCause
Forced landingDescent - emergency
In flight collision with terrain/waterLanding - flare/touchdown

Analysis

During a cross country flight, with a full fuel capacity, the pilot failed to select the correct tank and the engine lost power due to fuel starvation. Unsuitable terrain was encountered during the forced landing.
