From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-5) NWA1159 was at FL310 with opposite direction traffic at FL 330, 10 miles. NWA1159 notified ATC of complying with a TCAS climb resolution advisory (ra) for traffic 500 feet below. ATC advised that traffic was at their 12 o'clock position, FL 330 and 10 miles. NWA1159 again reported a climb ra. ATC verified the previous traffic advisory. The two aircraft passed within approximately 2 miles of each other with mode-c indicating FL314 for NWA1159 and FL330 for the other aircraft, causing a loss of separation. Aircrew deferred the discrepancy under direction of maintenance control and complied with placarding, referencing 34-43. Maintenance personnel preformed test iaw AMM34-45-0, TCAS system passed and placard removed, returned to service. This situation discussed with nwa certificate management office's DC-9 partial program manager on 4JAN99, and a copy of this report forwarded 15MAR99 to same for further action as cmo deems appropriate.
