From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
On may 13, 1999, at 1534, a Beechcraft 1900 N174YV operated by air midwest inc. declared an emergency at 2002 zulu. The aircraft was being operated as a commercial air carrier in air commerce. During climb in route to Kansas city MO. The crew detected smoke and fumes in the cabin. The crew declared an emergency and returned to Wichita, KS. And landed without incident at 2010 zulu. It was determined the flap motor had burned up internally causing the smoke and electrical fumes. Disassembly of the motor revealed both capacitors and the internal wires burned and charred. It could not be conclusively determined that the cause of the failure was due to internal fault of the motor. Investigation is continuing to determine if the motor failed because of a system or motor design, or an installation and rigging procedural problem.
