While in cruise flight between honolulu and Kahului, maui a hawaiian airlines Boeing 717 flight crew received a cargo smoke indication from the aft cargo compartment. The crew completed the appropriate qrh (abnormal) procedures, declared an emergency, and diverted to the nearest suitable airport. Upon landing in Kahului the flight and cabin crew assessed the need to evacuate the aircraft. The fire indications had ceased and the crew elected to taxi the aircraft to the gate with a crash/fire/rescue escort. Upon deplaning all the passengers the aft cargo bay was opened and investigated. Two items of luggage were determined to be affected by the fire. One of those items contained an e-cigarette that had either been left on by the passenger, or had turned on accidentally during transport. The cotton filament in the e-cigarette ignited due to heat and caused the ensuing fire. Hawaiian airlines prohibits the carriage of e-cigarettes in checked luggage. The bag was checked in at the terminal kiosk in honolulu by a family member traveling with the responsible passenger. The contents of the bag did not adhere to the airlines contract of carriage agreement. The responsible person was identified and questioned regarding the e-cigarette device. The person indicated the on/off switch on the device may have been loose. The owner of the baggage containing the e-cigarette is being investigated by the FAA security and hazardous materials safety division. (Ash)
