From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

1) On 03/12/2021 the airman was dispatched to take a flight to hooper bay and Chevak Alaska.

2) A flight risk assessment log was filled out and initialed by the pilot and the privacy data omitted dispatch agent.

3)The privacy data omitted weather sheet showed visibility at 10 miles, 1,900' overcast, and wind from 090 degrees @ 19 knots with a crosswind component of 16 knots

4) The area forecast for the day on the yukon kuskokwim delta listed a forecast for strong surface winds, 25 gusting to 35 knots increasing 30 gusting to 40 knots spreading east along the coast after 06 zulu (greenwich mean time). The accident occurred at 0146 zulu.

5) The pilot landed at hooper bay (15.4 miles west of Chevak) with Chevak in sight. The winds at hooper bay were between 16 and 20 knots, confirmed by a privacy data omitted pilot.

6) N407GV departed hooper bay for Chevak and overflew the airport to check winds. Winds were reported from 090 degrees at 20 knots by the Chevak AWOS (automatic weather observation station), and a landing was made without difficulty.

7)After loading 4 passengers and baggage the pilot initiated a back taxi to runway 20. Wind conditions were the same as at the time of landing.

8) During the taxi the pilot reported that the aircraft was hit by a sudden large gust of wind pushing him toward the west edge of the runway which he tried to counter with power and rudder control without success, in addition the wind appeared to shift from a cross wind toward a partial tailwind. The left tire sunk into the soft surface on the edge of the runway exposing the bottom of the right wing to the wind. The wind caused the left wing to impact the surface. The pilot initiated an engine shutdown in accordance with emergency procedures.

9) The privacy data omitted village agent estimated the gusts at the time to be 35 to 40 knots.
