From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 01/19/2022 N449JA, a PA-44, experienced an incident involving the collapse of the nose wheel upon landing. A flight instructor was conducting airwork with a student pilot in a local flight for part 141 flight training. The pilot reported that the landing gear did not indicate up and locked after completing power off stalls in the lake matthews practice area, but that the landing gear consistently indicated down and locked when cycled to the down position. The pilot elected to return to cno for landing, during which he reports losing control on landing rollout. The aircraft departed the landing surface to the right when steering inputs were ineffective, struck a runway sign, and came to rest with a collapsed nose wheel mount. Both propellers struck the ground and bent as a result, and the underside of the aircraft in the nose area was damaged. The flight school pursued insurance adjustment believing repair could be made, however the airplane was determined to be a loss due to cost of repair.

As the FAA filed it
