What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Approximately 0940 CDT, on August 17, 2002, a Bellanca BL-17-30A, N8851V, s/n 30372, departed beatrice, Nebraska, on a VFR flight to hastings, Nebraska. The aircraft lost power approximately 15 to 20 minutes into the flight over Ohiowa, Nebraska. The pilot (sole occupant) attempted to restart the engine after first turning the fuel selector to another fuel tank. After one attempt, he then turned the fuel selector back to the same tank (left main) and made an emergency landing in a field 1.5 miles west of the town of Ohiowa. After FAA personnel arrived to review the accident and go over the aircraft with the PIC it was found the left main fuel tank was empty, and there was also no fuel in the engine fuel strainer. No fuel could be removed from the fuel tank sump or could be seen in the aircraft left main fuel tank. The other three fuel tanks on board the aircraft were filled to the top of the fuel caps when inspected at the scene. privacy data omitted
