What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
The aircraft landed at Cleburne airport (cpt) on runway 15. During roll out prior to getting the tail wheel down the aircraft was pushed hard by an unexpected gusting crosswind. The pilot applied additional right aileron to arrest sideway drift and left pedal to maintain runway alignment. Just before the tail wheel touched the ground, the rudder became ineffective. The pilot starting applying the left brake but was still unable to prevent the aircraft from being pushed off the runway. The aircraft to weathervane further nose right and began to slide sideways. The left wing impacted the runway surface and all the side force caused the tire to flex damaging the wheel assembly. The aircraft continued into the grass before the pilot was able to get the tail wheel down and regain control of the rudder. A visual inspection by pilot and passenger concluded no damage from their vantage point. They decided to taxi the aircraft off the runway and to the ramp. The aircraft was tied down on the ramp and a more detailed visual inspection was conducted which found the wheel assembly and wing tip were damaged.
