Federal Aviation Administration Engine & Propeller Directorate Airworthiness Concern Sheet For Reciprocating Engines and Components This Airworthiness Concern Sheet is intended as a means for FAA Aviation Safety Engineers to coordinate airworthiness concerns with engine owners/operators through AOPA. At this time, the FAA has not made a determination on what type of corrective action (if any) should be taken. The resolution of this airworthiness concern could involve Airworthiness Directive (AD) action or a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB), or the FAA could determine that no action is needed at this time. The FAA’s final determination will depend in part on the information received in response to this ACS.
The FAA endorses dissemination of this technical information to the General Aviation community and requests responses within 2 weeks from AOPA.

Reason for Airworthiness Concern:
Camshaft Gear Teeth Failure Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Description of Airworthiness Concern
There have been 3 occurrences of CMI Camshaft Gear P/N 656031 with failed gear teeth due to fatigue.
Camshaft gear teeth failure can result in loss of engine power in flight and forced landing. CMI has only seen failures involving gear P/N 655516.
Camshaft gear P/N 655516 was manufactured from 1999 to 2002, then was superseded by P/n 656031 from 2002 to 2005. CMI then introduced P/N 656818 in 2009 (via Service Bulletin SB05-8A), which superseded P/N 656031.
