From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) Pilot stated he had fueled the aircraft at Stinson field and was proceeding to sat. After the aircraft took off, the pilot noted an odd odor entering the aircraft as he climbed through 1300FT. As the aircraft climbed to 2500 ft, the engine lost power. The pilot checked all the settings and was unable to re-start the engine. The pilot declared an emergency and turned toward Stinson field. Knowing he would not be able to land at Stinson field the pilot and student started looking for a clear field to land the aircraft. The pilot elected to leave the gear up and landed the aircraft in a plowed field. After the aircraft touched down it started to lean toward the left side allowing the wing to contact the ground which caused structural damage to the forward spar. No post crash fire. No NMAC. No damage to persons or property on the ground. (-23 amendment) post accident investigation revealed exhaust stack assembly failed at the turbocharger inlet.
